IUP Men’s Hockey opened the second semester with a competitive 2-1-1 record, highlighted by gritty performances in outdoor play and a weekend sweep that built momentum heading into CHMA league action.
The semester began with a pair of outdoor games against Lawrence Tech. In the opening matchup, IUP fell 2-1 despite a strong effort throughout. Shawn Donovan scored the lone goal for the Crimson Hawks, while Shane Peremba got the start in net and turned aside 27 of 29 shots in a hard-fought loss.
The following day saw another tight contest, as the teams battled to a 3-2 decision in an eight-round shootout. Goaltender Braxton Singleton made his first ACHA start and impressed, stopping 36 of 38 shots to keep IUP in the game. Goals for the Crimson Hawks came from Spencer Johnston and Shane Miller, but IUP ultimately came up just short in the shootout.
IUP rebounded the next weekend with a road sweep of Drexel University. In the first game, the Crimson Hawks earned a 3-2 overtime victory. Goals were scored by Caleb Hoffman and Jace Rearic in regulation, with Matthew Loza netting the game-winner in overtime. Singleton was solid once again, earning his first ACHA win after stopping 34 of 36 shots.
The momentum carried into Saturday as IUP completed the sweep with a convincing 5-1 win. Jace Rearic led the way with two goals, while Matthew Loza, Shane Miller, and Hunter Fairman also found the back of the net. Connor Halpert got the start in goal and delivered a standout performance, making 49 saves on 50 shots to secure his eighth win of the season.
With the semester underway, IUP now turns its focus to CHMA league play as the Crimson Hawks close out the year. On Friday, IUP will face Duquesne University, a team they previously defeated 4-0 earlier this season. Saturday’s matchup features Robert Morris University, where IUP looks to replicate its earlier success after earning a 5-3 win in the first meeting.
As league play intensifies, IUP Hockey looks to build on its strong start to the second semester and continue its push toward postseason success.
